This is a college-to-graduate level course on observational techniques in astronomy. It will describe the methods and principles that we use to measure the electromagnetic radiation from celestial objects, and how this can lead to knowledge about these objects. Through the course, students will gain hands-on experience of operating small telescopes and processing astronomical data. Optional on-campus and off-campus observations will be provided. Course material (viewgraphs, homework sets) will be in English. Lectures will be given in Mandarin, unless there are international students in the class. Edit (Aug 21): the off-campus observations are set to be on Nov 18 (Sat) and 19 (Sun) at Lulin Observatory. We will depart on Nov 18 and come back on Nov 20.

Students should have taken general physics and general astronomy. Priority will also be given to graduate students in physics and astronomy, and then junior and senior students in physics.

This course in the past was known for giving homework assignments that are more intense than average. It's unclear whether this will change.
