流行病學為公衛研究的基礎工具，流行病學知識也是制訂衛生政策最重要的依據。社會流行病旨在分析疾病問題的「社會致病成因」（social determinants of health），試圖結合實證研究，改善「健康不平等」(social inequalities in health)。此課程介紹社會流行病學的基礎原理，包括發展歷程、研究設計、測量、社會致病成因內容以及統計分析方法。本課程並希望提升學生閱讀與批判社會流行病學實證論文之能力。 Epidemiology is the foundation for public health research. Evidence obtained from epidemiological research could inform health policies. The aim of social epidemiology is to investigate social determinants of health and to tackle social inequalities in health based on empirical evidence. This course will introduce the principles of social epidemiology, including historical background, study design, measurement, social causation models, and statistical tools. This course is aimed to enhance the students’ capacity to critically appraise social epidemiological research.

學生在修習完此課程後，將可以具備以下能力： 1. 能解釋社會行為與社區因子如何影響個人及人群健康的機轉。(HPM-PhD-A) 2. 能將社會及行為科學相關的理論、概念與模式應用於公共衛生研究和實務。(HPM-PhD-B) 3. 瞭解社會流行病學的發展過程、原理原則與政策應用 4. 應用社會流行病學之研究設計與測量方法 5. 具備分析批判社會流行病學實證論文之能力 The students are expected to develop the below capacities after completing the course – 1. Explain the mechanisms through which socio-behavioral and community factors affect the health of individuals and populations. (HPM-PhD-A) 2. Apply the key theories, concepts, and models from a range of social and behavioral disciplines that are used in public health research and practice. (HPM-PhD-B) 3. Describe the key concepts and processes of policy-making to improve the health of population. (HPM-MS-B) 4. Understand the development, principle, and policy implications of social epidemiological research. 5. Apply the study designs and measurements used in social epidemiological research. 6. Develop the skills to critically appraise empirical research in the field of social epidemiology.

學生需要在課程參與討論、完成指定閱讀及作業，完成期中報告，並在期末進行口頭報告。 Students are expected to: 1) Participate in class discussion, 2) Read the required readings, 3) Complete the assignments (individually), 4) Complete the mid-term report (as a group), and 5) Present and submit the final report (as a group).
