  • 課程概述
Drawing on studies in psychology, management, and communication, this course covers various topics (e.g., identity, motivation, and interpersonal relationships) from a cross-cultural perspective. The first half of the course starts with an introduction to culture and cross-cultural communication and proceeds to map world cultures along the dimensions of value systems and how such systems affect individuals in terms of development and communication. The second half of the course applies knowledge to different settings and elaborates on how the differences impact conflict management and relational maintenance in various contexts, such as tourism, business, education, and health care.
  • 課程目標
This course aims to aid the students in understanding the importance of culture in individual, group, and organizational settings to enhance communications and effectively manage cultural differences. Upon finishing this course, students are expected to be able to: 1. Recognize the impact of cultural value systems on human motivation, behaviors, emotions, and interpersonal relationships. 2. Acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge of cross-cultural communication. 3. Cultivate competence in oral, written, and interpersonal communication and collaboration skills through the group project. 4. Develop a culture-sensitive perspective to understand the cultural differences in various contexts and address their challenges.
  • 課程要求
    1. Preparation and attendance. You are expected to prepare for each class by reading or watching assigned materials. You may be called on to summarize the major arguments of the assigned materials and/or give your interpretation or critique of them. Regular attendance is expected. Failure to attend regularly and be prepared will be grounds for a grade reduction at the professor’s discretion. 2. Professionalism and active participation. You should come to the class prepared to listen and participate. Your level of engagement with the materials is part of your grade. You are expected to contribute your thoughts and opinions during class discussions and group presentations. 3. Respect. All individuals in the class are expected to maintain mutual respect in the learning environment. 4. Laptop/tablets/cell phone policy. You are allowed to use laptops or tablets in class to take notes. You should, however, refrain from using the cell phone during class, especially when your classmates are presenting their work. 5. Enrollment. Anyone interested in enrolling in this course should be physically present for the first lecture to see if the course is for you. If it is, fill in the request form for authorization codes in class. I will not be responding to any emails before the first week.

    Attendance

Per school policy, everyone is allowed 3 absences, but failure to attend classes (excluding the two exams) 5 times or more will result in a fail in the final grade.

    10%

    Participation

Active class participation is highly encouraged. Although the class is in English, you may participate in the class discussion in Mandarin or any other language your instructor understands (unfortunately, currently, it’s just English and Mandarin, but I’m working on it). The TA will take note of those who have spoken in class and the participation grade will largely be based on it. Make sure you register with the TA for your participation grade.

    40%

    Mid-term exam

This exam covers topics discussed before the exam and consists of 20 multiple-choice questions and 4 or 5 short-answer questions.

    40%

    Group project

Students are expected to form groups of 3-5 persons and collaborate on a project relevant to cross-cultural communication and management and the team members’ shared interests. The course instructors will grade 30% (15% for a complete written report, 5% for the slides, and 10% for the presentation), and your peer members will grade 10%. Please note that if you fail to submit the peer review before the deadline, you will receive 0 points for your own peer review, and all the group members who have submitted the review on time will get full points of 5 automatically.
