Over the course of the 8 sessions (two per day, once a week), students will investigate the international political economy of the People’s Republic of China. Once an exporter of socialist revolution and foreign aid during the Mao era, China is now a leading global power in trade, investment, and development finance. In this process of transformation, China is blurring boundaries between the state and business, challenging conventional ideas about development, and remaking international economic institutions. Topics covered include China’s trade, investment, development finance, participation in international institutions like the World Trade Organization and World Bank, and campaigns like the Belt and Road Initiative. The course will discuss the economics, politics, and ideas shaping China’s policy decisions, and critically consider their implications from the perspectives of domestic and international actors.
- 課程目標•Examine key topics in China’s international political economy •Understand the historical and domestic context of international economic behavior by Chinese actors •Critically analyze key contemporary issues in China’s international political economy •Strengthen academic research and writing skills
- 課程要求Attendance and participation grades are based on class attendance, contributing to discussion based on the readings, and raising questions. There will be several short in-class activities; your participation in these activities will be a factor in your overall participation grade, but they will not be individually graded. Wikipedia audit. You will choose a topic from the course and identify a related Wikipedia entry. Next, you will read the entry carefully to identify its strengths and weaknesses (e.g. content accuracy, coverage, and potential biases), review its citations (e.g. sources, credibility), identify areas for improvement or gaps (e.g. adding new information, correcting inaccuracies, or expanding sections), and submit your edits to Wikipedia. Finally, you will submit a short summary (2 pages minimum, double-spaced) which includes information about the Wikipedia article you selected, what edits you made, the outcome, and reflections about your experience and the generation of knowledge on open-access platforms more broadly.
- 預期每週課前或/與課後學習時數You will choose 1 reading each week—academic journal articles and book chapters only—and complete a 1-page critical reading exercise for each. This assignment will ask you to summarize and critically analyze the content of each reading. A worksheet you will use to complete this assignment will be provided. Research paper. This 10-page research paper will identify and analyze a policy or issue related to one of the class topics of your choice. You will be required to (1) explain why this policy was adopted; (2) trace the policy over time; (3) explain why the policy changed (or why it has stayed relatively constant); (4) discuss the key actors in this policy area (individuals and organizations); (5) analyze its economic, political, and/or social consequences.
