- I have decided to devote myself in a research carrier in Biological Sciences since I was a high school student. My passion and motivation still holds true. Epigenetics is a fast growing field whose significance has been revealed in various physiological process, as well as disease conditions, including cancer. Studying epigenetic reprogramming mechanism forms the foundation for the possibility of nuclear transfer-based therapeutic cloning, stem cell technology and tissue engineering. Heritable changes not involving mutations have been underestimated, especially in Taiwan. I am now eager to continue and extend my research in this field as well as passing my passion in Epigenetics and as a scientist to a younger generation in Taiwan. I have every belief that we can make a significant contribution in Taiwanese Epigenetic research community together.

Epigenetic mechanisms behind these phenomenons and comparison with early embryo developments and germ cell development will be highlighted. In addition, the application of stem cells in drug screen platform, the applications of stem cells and 3D organoids culture in cell-based therapy and drug screen platform would be covered. The additional value from integrating biomaterials in stem cell research and therapy would also be introduced. The current regulation of cell based therapy in Taiwan and various countries will also be discussed and debated. In addition to taught course and online supplementary teaching material, a selected recent research articles will be introduced and the experimental design behind each original research articles introduced. The students will have the opportunity to gain understanding to the manuscript review process by the "author and reviewer" role playing activities. The scientific oral and written presentation abilities in English will also be developed and accessed.
- Course ObjectiveTo help students developing solid knowledge about the properties and promises of stem cells in development and therapy. To help students building enough background to judge the quality of stem cell related research articles. To help students building their own opinion on stem cell based therapy and related industry. Will assist students to develop oral and written presentations on stem cell related topics, as well as conducting scientific debate in English.
- Course RequirementStudents with prior knowledge in cell biology and molecular biology or Genetics are preferred. The students are expected to discuss with their group members in advance concerning selected papers to be presented and critically analyzed in the class. An open book midterm exam and a written report on one of the formats is required: research proposal, mini-review, news and views, or a reviewer's comment.
