  • Course Description
Statistics is one of the tools for understanding social phenomena. This course provides basic training in social statistics, with the main purpose of teaching students to understand some basic statistical analysis methods, especially those that can be applied to describe and explain statistical data related to social work practice. In addition to introducing the basic concepts of social statistics, this course also incorporates practical sessions, allowing students to learn the operation of relevant statistical software. The course content is divided into three main parts: firstly, it introduces the role of statistics in social science research, followed by descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and how to interpret current social issues and phenomena based on the obtained statistical figures. The course will focus on practical applications and classroom exercises related to the social work profession and the field of social sciences, with a part of the course delivered through lectures and another part through practical sessions. This course will particularly emphasize the meaning behind statistical methods and the logic of statistical operations, expecting students to learn how to translate statistical results into meaningful textual interpretations and apply them in research, daily life, or future employment. Finally, the course will also teach students how to read articles with empirical research containing statistical data, teaching the principles and applications of statistical analysis, as well as instructing students in learning the R language and SPSS statistical analysis software, encouraging students to utilize free online resources for learning and to actively ask questions. Lecture classes are three hours per week, led by the course instructor, while practical sessions are two hours per week in group format, mainly for review of weekly progress and homework exercises, assisted by teaching assistants to achieve effective learning outcomes, with exercises assigned according to the course progress each week. The latter half of the statistics course will strengthen students' understanding and execution of various inferential statistical methods, cultivating students' basic analytical strategies.
