Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the metaverse as an “embodied Internet” that gives one a “feeling of presence.” He believes in the metaverse so much as to change Facebook’s name to Meta Platforms on 2021/12/01. However, the dream of the coming era of metaverse has been disappointing, the stock price of Meta Platforms (previously Facebook) fell more than 60% in a year and in November 2022, Zuckerberg announced a massive layoff of 11,000 jobs about 13% of the workforce. Is the metaverse for real? Yes, but… Please come to the class and join a learning journey of the metaverse... This course is an introductory course to the 3D creation for the metaverse. It will introduce you to what the metaverse means. You will also learn basic 3D skills to create your 3D objects and avatars and experience the merging of the virtual and reality 3D world. The classes are divided into three parts: (A) 3D Foundation Topics: Introduction to 3D Graphics and Rendering, Metaverse, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). (B) 3D Creation-Practices Topics: 3D open source tool Blender, 3D Character Creation, Modeling, Unwrapping and Texturing, Rigging and Walk Cycle, Avatar, 3D scan, and Animation (C) 3D Case Study Topics: case studies of 3D applications and metaverse ventures. Special features: 1. The 3D tools for this course are free, open-source, and cross-platform tools. No costs to students. 2. This course is for both information technology/management students and non-technical majors. 3. Guest speakers from 3D professional fields will share their experiences in class and help demonstrate 3D tools and help 3D exercises. *if you are unable to register for this course online and would like to obtain the authorization code to add this course or if there is any question, please contact Dr. Edward Hsieh dr.edhsieh@gmail.com **You may also come to the first class to obtain the authorization code to register for this course
