  • Course Description
    The course "Modern Japanese Civil Law and Jurisprudence: Reflections from a Civil Law Scholar's Experience" focuses on the Japanese civil law and jurisprudence during the Heisei era (1989-2019). Through the perspective of the professor's own experiences and insights, the course explores the evolution of civil law and the social transformations in Japan. Additionally, it examines the progress of university education and legal studies during the Heisei period from an educator's standpoint. The curriculum encompasses the development of civil law studies and pivotal events of the Heisei era, systematically analyzing the impact of changes in the legal landscape on Japanese society, along with the underlying theoretical dimensions. Aspects such as legal reforms and alterations to the judicial system will undergo thorough examination. Furthermore, the course delves into issues surrounding individuals, society, and civic participation, contemplating rights and responsibilities through themes such as contracts and family law. The professor's extensive research activities and international studies are also introduced, shedding light on Japan's legal studies within different legal systems and cultural contexts. In summary, this course extensively explores the interconnectedness of Japanese legal studies and societal dynamics during the Heisei era. Through the professor's experiences and research, students are provided with the opportunity to comprehend the evolution of legal studies and the underlying ideological background. *This course is told in Japanese, but before the course starts, professor will provide lecture notes (written in Japanese) for ensuring students can catch up with the course progress more easily.
