  • Course Description
    This course will introduce and study James Joyce’s two novels--_Dubliners_ and _A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man_--in detail. Special attention will be paid to Joyce’s narrative techniques, in addition to the introduction of the necessary socio-historico-cultural context of his novels.
  • Course Objective
    By studying and discussing Joyce’s short stories and one novel in detail, the course aims to familiarize students with the Irish and modernist contexts in which Joyce wrote and Joyce's stylistic concerns and innovations.
  • Course Requirement
    Students are required to preview the texts, participate in (weekly) group discussions, rotate-give (a minimum of two) oral reports, and write one take-home quiz, one self-study essay, a mid-term paper, and a final creative project.

    _Dubliners_(Viking 1967)_; _A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man_ (Viking 1964)_ Both are available at Bookman, Inc. These versions are preferred for the sake of synchronizing page references during discussions.
