  • Course Description
    This course will introduce the conceptual framework of social determinants of health (SDH) and examine how globalization affects various types of SDH and consequentially influences the health of individuals and populations. Societal and policy-level SDHs will be highlighted, and emphases will be placed on analyses of interventions and solutions to tackle health inequalities. Selected SDHs are chosen for in-depth analysis based on the specialties of the instructors.
  • Course Objective
    Upon completion of the course, students should acquire the following competencies: 1. Understand the key concepts of social determinants of health; 2. Comprehend the consequences of globalization on social determinants of health and health inequalities; 3. Propose and analyze the different types of health policies to tackle health inequalities.
  • Course Requirement
    The course is offered in English. A basic understanding of public health and health policy is helpful but not a prerequisite. Students are expected to read assigned readings prior to the lecture and submit assignments on a weekly basis. Students are also expected to participate in class discussions and work on a final group project.

    Participation

    1) Before the class: Students should read the assigned readings. Guiding questions will be provided prior to the class to assist with reading. 2) During the class: Students should physically attend the class and actively engage in class discussions. Students will be called to answer questions.

    3) After the class: Submit a one-page note summarizing what you learned from the reading and class discussion (choose at least 10 classes and write in your own words - not generated by AI).

    Final report and oral presentation

    Students should write up a report and present it to the class. The final report can be done individually or in groups of up to three students. • 11/05/2025 (Wednesday): Submit the title and outline of the report. • 12/26/2025 (Friday): Submit the final written paper (Length is flexible, but suggest limiting to 5000 words, excluding references)
