  • Course Description
Freedom of speech is a human right that is being challenged and under threat in most societies, including in Taiwan. Understanding the complexities of freedom of speech, including its importance, as well as its challenges that threaten to undermine this value will only become more important over time, as new technologies are developed and authoritarian governments seek to control them.
  • Course Objective
This course aims to equip students with the theories, arguments and evidence that underlie the current debates about freedom of speech, as well as train the student to take positions and defend them. After taking this course, the student should be able to 1) analyze freedom of speech from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives, including cross-cultural, legal, technological, social, political, and economic approaches; 2) understand and defend different positions related to both historical and contemporary freedom of speech debates, and 3) present logical and persuasive arguments in writing and in presentations.
